OVERVIEW

The Department of Chemistry started in the academic year 2001 and is handling Applied Chemistry (theory & practical) for classes of I & II semester engineering (all branches). The department has a well equipped lab with latest instruments to conduct the experiments as prescribed by VTU. The curriculum integrates core of chemistry with a body of engineering in a manner that allows chemical knowledge to be put in to the practice. To cater the needs of the students, we have well qualified, committed and experienced faculties.

 

College learning resource center: has a rich collection of books and journals in engineering chemistry. Over 1200 books with various titles are available. The library has subscribed to several journals and has provided access to various E-resources in chemistry.

 

We have the following subscribed journals in Chemistry:


 Indian journal of Chemistry, Sec A and B
 International Journal of Waste Water treatment and Green Chemistry.

To ‘promote and impart the applied engineering chemistry knowledge and transform the wisdom into action”.

MISSION

 To foster the inquisitiveness in students and make them to understand the fundamentals of chemical science and technology.


 To inform the students of the latest development in applied engineering chemistry so that they can exploit it for development of technologies in their respective disciplines.


 To infuse the innovative research attitude in the student, so that he could be an innovator or inventor of tomorrow.

LONG TERM GOALS

 To build up the department potentially to embark upon research along with academics and motivating the faculty towards research.


 To develop effective teaching-learning modules.


 To adopt the modern trends in education concepts, (smart board use/ HowStuffWorks-videos/Ted-Talks/Moodle usage).


 Use of ‘Moodle software’ for online assignment, quiz conduction and circulation of PDF notes

The Department of Chemistry is well furnished with instruments and equipment to carry out the prescribed experiments. The following are the subjects taught

EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED IN ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY LABORATORY:

 

The Department of Chemistry has well furnished state of the art laboratory facilities to cater the needs of undergraduate engineering students.

 

Instrumental Experiments

 

  1. Estimation of FAS potentiometrically using standard K2Cr2O7 solution.
  2. Estimation of Copper colorimetrically.
  3. Estimation of Acids in acid mixture conductometrically.
  4. Determination of pKa of weak acid using pH meter.
  5. Determination of Viscosity co-efficient of the given liquid using Ostwald’s viscometer.
  6. Estimation of Sodium and Potassium in the given sample of water using Flame Photometer.

 

Volumetric Experiments

 

  1. Estimation of Total hardness of water by EDTA complexometric method.
  2. Estimation of CaO in cement solution by rapid EDTA method.
  3. Determination of percentage of Copper in brass using standard sodium thiosulphate solution.
  4. Estimation of Iron in haematite ore solution using standard K2Cr2O7 solution by External Indicator method.
  5. Estimation of Alkalinity (OH- , CO3- & HCO3- ) of water using standard HCl solution.
  6. Determination of COD of waste water.
